JAMES BROWN

ACCIDENT AT KIRKCONNEL PIT.

An accident of an alarming and serious nature occurred in No. 1 Fauldhead Pit, Kirkconnel, on Wednesday afternoon, whereby James Brown, miner, who resides at Riverside Terrace, Kellobank, had a very narrow escape from being killed. He was seriously injured and will be permanently incapacitated. Brown was employed at the coal face, and had charged a shot for the of blasting the coal. Having lighted the fuse he retired to a safe distance until the shot went off. After waiting some considerable time it became apparent that the shot had either missed or hung fire so he returned to the face to ascertain what was wrong. Unfortunately, it was a case of hang fire, and when he reached his place the shot went of and he received the full force of the explosion. On being extricated by his mates it was seen that his injuries were very serious and he was conveyed to the surface with all possible speed and received every attention from Dr Edgar. Unfortunately, his left hand was amputated, and his arm badly bruised. He also received severe injuries to his face and head. He was conveyed to Dumfries Royal Infirmary by the colliery motor ambulance, and his condition is regarded as serious. Brown is 28 years of age and married. He had made arrangements to go to Australia, and was due to sail in the course of a fortnight or so.
