ROBERT STEWART

KIRKCONNEL MINER KILLED.

Fatal Accident at Fauldhouse.

A most distressing fatality occurred in No. 1 Fauldhead Colliery, Kirkconnel, on Monday forenoon, resulting in the death of Robert Stewart, aged 58, and who resided in Main Street. He was engaged as a repairer in the D.C. section of the pit, and, along with two other workmen, John Gibson and Simon Grant, was clearing a fall which had occurred on a haulage road. While they were hard at work, another stone came away from the roof, and, striking Stewart, jammed his head against a hutch, which was nearby. He sustained terrible head injuries, and death was instantaneous.
The accident created a painful sensation among the other workers in the colliery, and out of respect for their dead comrade they immediately ceased work for the day. Deceased was an old Kirkconnel resident, and was held in high respect by all classes of the community. The utmost sympathy is felt for his widow and grown-up family.
