| 1932, 2nd May JAMES CLUCKIE DUNCAN KIRKCONNEL FATALITY. Miner Killed by Falling Stone. A fatality occurred in No. 1 Fauldhead Colliery, Kirkconnel, on Monday afternoon. The scene of the accident was in “Young's Dook" in the coal-cutting section, better known as the "Pan Runs," and the victim was James Duncan, a young married man of 28 years, who resided with his family in Kingsway, Kellobank. He was engaged shovelling coal at the face when a stone fell from the roof without any warning, and knocked him down. The first person to reach him was Robert Clelland, an oncost worker, who eased up the stone to allow the unfortunate man to be extricated. It was discovered that Duncan was beyond all aid. He received the force of the stone on the head, and death must have been instantaneous. Dr Edgar was quickly on the scene, and pronounced life extinct. The accident occurred almost at the end of the shift, and the afternoon shift as a token of respect for their dead comrade did not descend the Pit. News of the fatality quickly spread through the village, which has suffered many such tragedies. Deceased was a likeable lad, quiet and unassuming, and was held in the highest respect by the whole community. He leaves a young wife and five young children, the youngest being only six weeks old. To them the entire sympathy of Kirkconnel is extended in their sad and sudden bereavement.
