THOMAS PARKER

Miner Killed by Fall of Stone

A most distressing fatality occurred in No. 1 Fauldhead Pit, Kirkconnel, on Monday forenoon, resulting in the death of Thomas Parker, a well-known and highly respected citizen of Kirkconnel. Parker, who was 59 years of age and resided at 67 Kingsway, Kellobank, with his wife and a grown-up family of six, was employed as a brusher, and was working in No. 2 Black’s Mine along with another workman, John Allan, New Cumnock. They were back-brushing, and without warning a large stone fell from the, roof and caught Parker. He was badly crushed and died instantaneously. That he had small chance of escape may be gauged by the fact that the atone measured nearly14, feet in length, six feet broad, and about a foot thick. His mate raised the alarm, and his body was recovered and reverently brought to the surface. News- of the tragedy spread quickly, and created a profound sensation throughout the entire district, and much sympathy was extended to the bereaved family.
Tom Parker was a well-known personality in the life of the village. Of a quiet and unassuming disposition, he had many friends and was highly esteemed by all. A circumstance that emphasizes the uncertainty of the miner's life and the risks he runs in his daily work is that Tom Parker served throughout the Great War and escaped without any serious injury. He joined up in the early stages of the conflict, and was attached to the- 6th Battalion of the K.O.S. Borderers, and took part in much fighting in France, including the Battle of Loos. He was awarded the Military Medal.
He was a keen follower of Kello Rovers' Football Club, and was their first representative on the Ayrshire Junior Association.
As a token of respect to his memory the Kello Rovers players played with black armlets in their game with Cumnock Juniors on Monday evening, and yesterday the miners of both Kirkconnel pits showed their respect by remaining at home.
