PETER BLACK

KIRKCONNEL MINER KILLED.

Fall of Stone at Fauldhead Pit.

No. 3 Pit, Fauldhead Colliery, Kirkconnel, was the scene of a distressing accident last night, in which a young miner, Peter Black, aged 17, 3 New Buildings, Main Street, was fatally injured by a fall of stone from the roof. Along with another workman, Robert Queen, he was employed in the Kello mine, Braehead, and was engaged in haulage work. During the evening he found it necessary to go along the haulage road, and when he seemed long in returning Queen went in search of him and discovered him lying on the roadway buried under a large stone. Queen immediately telephoned the Section for assistance, and in a short time a number of miners appeared on the scene. The stone was removed, and it was found that the man was dead. Dr Bowman Edgar, Kirkconnel, was summoned and on examination he found that death was instantaneous, the skull having been fractured.
News of the fatality spread quickly through the town and caused a painful sensation. The unfortunate lad was the member of an old and highly respected family and much sympathy is extended to the relatives in their bereavement.
All the men employed in the pit ceased work after the accident, and the night shift did not go down.
