| 1942, 16th September MARTIN MCGUINN KIRKCONNEL PIT FATALITY. A young Kirkconnel miner, Martin McGuinn, who resided at McConnel Street, Kellobank, lost his life while following his employment in the section of No. 3, Fauldhead Colliery known as the Knowe Dook. He was engaged on the afternoon shift, and was working with his younger brother Walter at the coal-face. They had almost completed their shift on Tuesday night when the accident occurred. A stone, designated a "pot lid," broke away from the roof without any warning and struck the unfortunate man, who was buried in the debris. Assistance was quickly procured but when he was extricated it was discovered that he was dead. He was 29 years of age and had been married only about three months ago. The sympathy of the district is extended to his young widow and the relatives.
