KENNETH CAMPBELL
KIRKCONNEL PIT FATALITY.
A fatality occurred in No. 3 Fauldhead Colliery, Kirkconnel, early
on Friday morning when a young man, Kenneth Campbell, aged 26 years,
who resided at Guffock Road, Kirkconnel, lost his life.
Campbell, who was employed as a fireman and shotfirer in the colliery,
had fired a shot in 73 Section of No. 1 Haulage, and on returning
afterwards in the normal course of his duties to examine the effect
of the shot, he was struck by a large stone which fell from the roof,
and he was killed instantly. Dr Bowman Edgar was quickly on the scene
at the colliery but the unfortunate man was beyond aid.
The fatality caused a painful sensation in the district and the entire
sympathy of the community is extended to the sorrowing young widow
and child who survive.
Both Nos. 1 and 3 Fauldhead Collieries were idle on Friday in keeping
with the usual custom when a fatality occurs.
Deceased was a prominent member of the local Boy Scout movement and
took a keen interest in youth work.
