JOHN BAIRD

FAULDHEAD COLLIERY ACCIDENT

SURFACE WORKER DIES FROM INJURIES

The residents of Kirkconnel were shocked on Tuesday morning on learning of the death of 58-year-old Mr John Baird as the result of injures sustained in an accident at Fauldhead Colliery. Mr Baird, who was employed as a surface worker at the colliery, was engaged in unloading a lorry-load of pit props late on Monday afternoon. His task was almost completed when a bolster device, used to hold the timber in position on the lorry, became disengaged and the wooden bolster pin struck him on the head. He was taken to the medical centre at the colliery for First-Aid treatment and was taken home by ambulance after being attended to by the local doctor. Later in the evening he was removed to the Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, and afterwards when being conveyed to Killearn Hospital, he died on the journey to Killearn in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Mr Baird, who resided at 95 Anderson Street, Kelloholm, is survived by his widow and grown-up family. He was of a quiet disposition, and was highly respected in the community.
