Maxwell Thom was working at “the face” in the vicinity and on hearing the noise at once gave the alarm. He shouted on Harris, but there was no response. A large staff were engaged in clearing away the debris, and an hour and a half elapsed before the body was unearthed. An examination revealed that death had been instantaneous. The body was removed home at five o’clock in the afternoon. Deceased was 41 years of age, and he is survived by his widow and five of a family, the eldest being on service with the Royal Engineers. Mr. Harris was a member of North United Free Church, and was the uncle of Mr. J.N. Harris, secretary of Sanquhar and Kirkconnel Collieries Company.
