| 1920, 2nd March WILLIAM MURRAY COLLIERY FATALITY AT SANQUHAR MINER SUFFOCATED Yesterday morning, William Murray, miner, who resided at Crawick Mill, met his death while following his employment in the New Tower mine, Sanquhar. He was engaged in the night shift, and just about 6 a.m., when his shift was almost completed, the sad occurrence took place. He had fired a sound of shots, and had apparently rushed into the “face” too quickly to see the result of his shots, and before the fumes had cleared, with the consequence that he was overcome. A pump attendant, James Cockburn, thinking that Murray was long in coming out, shouted to him, but receiving no response, he went into the “face” and found Murray lying there. Cockburn carried him out and secured assistance. Artificial respiration was applied, but the unfortunate man was beyond human aid. Dr. J. K. Dunlop, Sanquhar, was in attendance and pronounced life extinct. Deceased was a highly respected citizen of the district, and the news of his unfortunate death created a gloom all over the place. He was about 40 years of age, and leaves a widow and four young children. To them the sympathy of the district is extended in their sad and sudden bereavement.
