JAMES ELLIOT

FATALITY AT GATESIDE PIT

A distressing accident occurred at Gateside Colliery yesterday afternoon whereby James Elliot, aged 37 years, a colliery engineer, who resided at Anderson Street, Kelloholm, Kirkconnel, was fatally injured. Elliot, along with other engineers, was repairing a breakdown in connection with the dross elevators after the pit had ceased work. Apparently the elevator chain which carries the dross buckets slipped and fell back into the hole, carrying the unfortunate man with it, and death was instantaneous.
The sad occurrence created a painful sensation in the district where he was held in the highest respect. He was of a quiet and unassuming disposition, and was a keen angler. He leaves a widow and two young children.
