ALAN MCFADZEAN

SANQUHAR COLLIERY FATALITY

A distressing fatality occurred at Gateside Pit, Sanquhar, yesterday resulting in the death of a young miner, Alan McFadzean, aged 33, who resided at Howie’s Road, Sanquhar. He was employed in the Whitehill section of the Colliery and the shift was drawing to a close when the fatality occurred. He had fired a shot and was returning to the coal face to ascertain the effect of it when he was struck by a stone which fell from the roof. He was almost clear but unfortunately it caught him on the side of the head and knocked him down, and death was instantaneous. Many of the men had concluded their shift and were congregated at the pit-bottom ready to ascend to the surface when the sad news reached them and considerable anxiety prevailed.
Deceased was of a quiet and reserved disposition and was held in high esteem by his workmates. He is survived by his widow and three young children, and the eldest of whom has been an inmate of Lochmaben Sanatorium for some considerable time. The sympathy of the entire district is extended to them in their sad and sudden bereavement.
