JOHN THIRLWELL
SANQUHAR MINER KILLED
Fall Of Stone In Gateside Pit
A most distressing fatality occurred in Gateside Pit, Sanquhar, on
Saturday forenoon, the victim being John Thirlwell, a young miner
who resided at Church Road.
Thirlwell was engaged at the coalface in the Whitehill section of
the pit and with his workmate, Alexander Crawford, High Street, was
loading a hutch of coals, when without warning a stone fell from the
roof and he received the full force of it. Crawford was unable to
free him and ran for assistance which was available immediately, but
when the unfortunate youth was extricated it was discovered that he
was beyond human aid.
Deceased was 26 years of age, and was of a quiet and unassuming disposition.
He was held in the highest esteem by all his workmates and by the
community in general. He leaves a young wife and child and to the
sympathy of the entire community is extended.
In accordance with custom the employees of Gateside Pit were idle
on Monday, as a token of respect to their late comrade.
