| 1941, 25th August JOHN DOUGLAS SANQUHAR COLLIERY FATALITY A distressing fatality occurred at Gateside Pit, Sanquhar, on Monday, resulting in the death of Mr. John Douglas, Castle Street, A well-known and highly respected native of the town. He was employed as a miner, an occupation he had followed since he left school, and on Monday morning he had just commenced work at the coalface in the Connelbush section of the pit when a large stone came away from the roof and he failed to get clear. He suffered from severe head and body injuries, and after receiving medical attention, he was removed to Dumfries Infirmary in the colliery motor ambulance. His injuries, unfortunately, were of such a severe nature that he died during the afternoon. He was over 40 years of age, and is survived by Mrs Douglas and a young family, and to them the sympathy of the community is extended in their sad and sudden bereavement.
